Today's been another busy days in the yard, we've been collecting scrap cars and vans from all over.
We even picked up a motorbike this morning which had given up the ghost finally.

You can always tell when we’ve had a rainy weekend.

Generally we pick up more write-offs, just because motorists are more prone to get into road traffic accidents when the weather’s wet again after a dry spell.

In fact the very changeable and temperamental British weather often affects how our cars respond.

The Scrappers boss Terry Walker explains:

“When the weather changes is when you see cars go wrong," he said.

"For instance if the weather goes hot you get cars overheating so you get them coming in with head gasket trouble, water trouble, radiator leaks and things like that."

In winter months, it's even worse.

Wet weather has caused a few collisions 

“When it goes frosty we get customers coming in for wiper motors because they just press the motor without defrosting first so the motors in the door or the front or back motor wipers burn out.

“Hot weather you get them coming in for air conditioned pumps that start failing. 

“And then when it snows we get a lot of collision damaged cars coming in from all the slipping around on the icy roads."

Terry who runs Britain's best known breakers yard in Bolton says the rain - as is currently the case - causes great havoc on the roads too.

“When it starts to rain the roads are a bit more slippery and people lose control," he added.

But it's the sudden fours-seasons-in-one-day kind of weather that can also cause an increase in accidents.

“They can be cruising along nice and bonny on a sunny day and when it starts to be a shower of rain they’ll just go straight through that puddle and expect the brakes to react and they just don’t so you get a lot of cars in collisions. 

“When the weather clashes on the same day, that's when you get more accidents.

“Say for instance it’s fine overnight and then frosty the next morning people jump in their cars and turn the wiper motor on when the windscreen wipers are stuck to the windscreen and they burn their wiper motor out so you get a lot of motors like alternators and starter motors making that turning over noise. They won’t start straight away so they whizz them over so you get a lot of starter motors alternators, air con pumps in the summer that have gone."

The end of the month is also when most cars arrive in the scrap yard, says Terry.

"The end of the month are all times when there is usually a surge in the number of cars coming to us," said Terry.

Road tax is due at the end of the month and for many motorists this extra expense means having a serious think about whether it’s worth taxing their current vehicle or scrapping it. 

"Many choose the scrap option," he added.

Catalytic Converter Theft

CAT BURGLAR

HERE is another casualty of increasingly common car crime - catalytic converter theft.

Also known as cat burglars, the problem has rapidly risen recently to over 600 percent, according to reports.

And last year London alone, saw nearly 3,000 cat converter robberies.

According to official stats, Kent, Cambridgeshire, Nottinghamshire and West Yorkshire are also cat theft hotspots.  

But it's happening closer to home too, right here in Bolton. 

Motorist Rob had his cat con pinched yesterday while he was in work.

Fortunately Rob had the wisdom to get intouch with The Scrappers and have a replacement catalytic converter sorted straight away for his Mitsubishi Colt.

Rob told The Scrappers he knew something was afoot when he turned his vehicle's engine on after his shift at work.

"I was at work from 11am until 8pm so 11am was the last time I used it because obviously it was parked up," said Rob.

"When it came to 8 at night I came outside, started my car and it made this really unhealthy noise. 

"So I checked underneath the car and it was just gone. Two clean cuts and the catalytic converter was gone."

Rob got in touch with us this morning and within 20 minutes he was back on the road, a happy man again. 

He's now hoping the robbers who took his petrol cat con will come unstuck - as there's a chance their heartless antics were caught on camera.

"I phoned my boss today just to see if the incident was captured on CCTV," said Rob. 

"He's going to go through the footage and get back to me."

Watch this space on this developing story as we will keep you up to date on any further findings.

Scrapyard Finds

WHAT'S ALL THE BUZZ ABOUT..

Britain's best known scrapyard has revealed some of the more unusual finds unearthed in scrapped vehicles, including sex toys, weapons, rats and living kittens.

Over the years Bolton breakers yard, The Scrappers - its name made famous in BBC1's reality show - discovered weird and downright wacky things left in vehicles that folk were getting shut of.

"We found quite a lot of sex toys," revealed boss Terry Walker.

"Vibrators, furry handcuffs and the like - and we recycled everything," he laughed. 

"We've found knives, guns - never a real one though, only a replica - and pellet guns. One looked real but wasn't."

The yard itself, based in Bolton's Waterloo Street, has been a hotbed of action - and that's been only too real! 

"We've had criminals running through the yard being chased by police," recalls Terry.

"And a few years ago I had a scrap yard in Bury. Suddenly a gang of criminals started running through the yard, carrying a box with smoke pouring out of it. I thought, 'what the hell is this'.  

"Anyway the police caught them and took them away." Terry never did find out what was in the box.

What he has uncovered over the years are rats - scores of them - which shocked him to the core. 

"These rats were living in a car about to be scrapped and I had no idea until I lifted the car with our grabbing machine Gloria," he explains.

"We went really high with that car - and then they all jumped out.

"They must have been at least ten metres high, but they all leapt out, hit the ground, going splat, but they didn't die. They just got back on their feet and ran off as though they'd been on a fairground ride. It was completely barmy. There must have been at least 20 of them."

A more pleasant find for Terry was a cute kitten which luckily was in good health and taken back to its owner.

"A few years ago we found a little fluffy black kitten hiding under the bonnet of a car we'd picked up.

"This poor thing had travelled all the way from Oldham to Bolton - a good 20 miles -  but fortunately it was in good health, bright eyed and bushy tailed.

"We searched on social media for the kitten's owner and eventually we found it belonged to a family in Oldham. We ended up taking it back home to be reunited with its mum."

The Scrappers is currently trying to raise money for the Bolton Royal’s Intensive baby care unit. 

They’ve launched a range of caricature mugs featuring members of the team hoping sales will raise £1,000.00.

“My daughter Cathy Lee was born at 1lb, 9oz, doctors told us she wouldn’t survive but I never gave up hope. 

“Now she is 32-years-old, has two children of her own and runs her own successful beauty business, she’s a little bobby dazzler.

“That’s the reason why I always choose the baby care unit. They do a fantastic job.”

Ever since we burst onto TV screens six years ago in BBC1's The Scrappers, we've grown accustomed to the limelight. 🤩

We're constantly filming footage showing folk what we do best because we are busy bees in Britain's best-known breakers yard. 

Our depot is a hive of activity and we get a buzz out of it. 🐝

It's about keeping spirits lifted and getting the job done professionally, safely and making customers happy.

Not so long ago we installed a giant digital outdoor screen to give visitors and passers-by a glimpse of what we do - it's on par to the giant drive-in movie theatres! Who knows, one day it could be Scrappers - the musical 🎬 🍿🎶

We've been having a bit of fun making a few ads and funny mini-movies. Our very own graphic designer and video editor Luis De Almeida has compiled a short clip showing what we do.

The Scrappers bossman Terry Walker explains how it works: "I had a message on my LinkedIn from a guy in Alicante, Spain. 

"I'm familiar with the scrap trade in Alicante as I've dealt with another company over there.

"This guy buys engines and gearboxes. The next time I go to Mercia I will meet him, but meanwhile I'm going to be selling him some engines.

"We are compiling a list now which I'll fire over to him and I'm confident we will be doing further business too."
